Water Pump Problems in Indonesia: A Simple Fix Guide

Turn on the tap and... nothing. Or a sad, gasping dribble. In most Indonesian homes, that means the water pump (pompa air) is unhappy. It's one of the most common home faults here, partly because pumps run hard — every single day, often through power cuts, dry tanks, and gritty bore water that wears them down fast.

  • Lost prime. The pump lost its water seal and is now just spinning air. Many pumps have a small priming cap on top — fill it with clean water, close it firmly, and try again.

  • Air leak in the suction pipe. A cracked fitting on the intake side lets air in and kills suction. Look for drips or damp spots on the inlet pipe.

Pump won't turn on at all

Pump runs constantly and won't shut off

  • On a tank system, the float switch may be stuck or broken, so the pump never gets the "tank full" signal.
  • On a pressure system, a faulty pressure switch or a small leak somewhere makes it cycle forever, chasing pressure it can't hold.

Pump is loud, rattling, or vibrating

  • Could be air in the system, worn bearings, or loose mounting bolts on the base.
