AC Installation in a Bali Villa: What to Know

Putting AC into a Bali villa isn't the same job as fitting one into a small apartment in Jakarta. High ceilings. Open-plan rooms that flow into the kitchen. Salty sea air eating at the metal. And that gorgeous-but-tricky tropical architecture, all glass and timber and not many solid interior walls. Get the install wrong and you'll fight a warm room and a brutal power bill for years.

The good news: almost all of it is decided *before* anyone drills a hole in your wall. Get these calls right at the start and the rest takes care of itself.

Quick answer: Size up for villas (high ceilings and sun beat the basic m² rule). Go inverter if you'll run it daily. Protect the outdoor unit from salt air near the coast with anti-corrosion coils. And nail down the all-in install price including pipe length before any drilling. A basic install runs about Rp 250.000; a villa job with a long run, second floor, or bracket work climbs from there.

Get the sizing right (PK matters more than you think)

The single most common mistake? Buying an AC that's too small because the bigger one felt expensive. You save Rp 1jt at the shop and then run an underpowered unit flat-out for five years until it dies young. Bad trade.

PK is the unit's power rating. A rough guide tuned for Bali:

But the m² rule alone undersizes villas. Two things to add capacity for:

  • High or vaulted ceilings. A 20 m² room with a 4-meter alang-alang ceiling holds way more air than the floor area suggests.
  • Sun and glass. Big sliding doors catching the afternoon sun pour heat in. Open flow into the kitchen adds load too.

If your living room ticks any of those boxes, size up a notch. An undersized unit runs nonstop, never quite cools, and burns out early.

Pro tip: When in doubt between two sizes, go bigger for living areas and right-sized for bedrooms. An oversized bedroom unit short-cycles and feels clammy; an undersized living-room unit just loses.

Inverter or non-inverter?

For a villa you actually live in, go inverter, almost always.

It costs more upfront, but it adjusts its output continuously instead of slamming fully on and fully off. So it sips less power, holds the temperature steady, and runs quieter. In a place where the AC is on most of the day — which is most Bali homes — the electricity savings genuinely add up over a year.

Where non-inverter still makes sense:

  • A guest room you only cool a handful of nights a month
  • A tight budget where you'll replace it in a few years anyway
  • A space where runtime is genuinely short and rare

For everything you use daily, inverter pays for itself.

Placement: where the units actually go

Getting the location right is half the battle, and it's free to get right.

Indoor unit

  • Mount it high on the wall, blowing across the room — not straight down onto your bed, or you'll wake up frozen and stiff.
  • Not directly above the door — cold air just escapes every time it opens.
  • Somewhere the drain line can run downhill to the outside, so condensation flows out by gravity instead of pooling and dripping down your wall.

Outdoor unit — the Bali-specific part

This is where local knowledge earns its keep.

  • Shade it if you can. A condenser baking in full afternoon sun works harder and ages faster.
  • Lift it off the ground, away from where rain pools in the wet season.
  • Keep it away from direct sea spray. This is the big one near the coast.
Watch out: Salt air destroys outdoor units. Near the beach in Canggu, Uluwatu, Bingin, or anywhere the sea breeze reaches, a standard condenser can corrode in a couple of years. Ask specifically for anti-corrosion (blue-fin) coils and stainless-steel brackets. It costs a little more and doubles the unit's life.

And keep the pipe run between indoor and outdoor units as short as you reasonably can. Long runs lose cooling efficiency and cost more to install.

What a good install actually includes

Don't accept a "hang it and go" job. Cutting corners here doesn't show up today — it shows up as a dead unit in two years. A proper installation includes:

  • Vacuuming the lines before releasing refrigerant. Skipping this leaves moisture and air in the system, which slowly kills the compressor. It's the most-skipped step and the most important.
  • A leak check on every connection and flare fitting.
  • The outdoor bracket secured properly — level, tight, and rated for the unit's weight.
  • A full test of cooling and drainage before they pack up.

If a technician finishes a complete install in twenty minutes and won't run a test cycle, something got skipped. Speak up.

Booking the right person — the actual hard part

Here's the thing nobody tells you. The technical stuff above? Any decent tukang AC knows it. The hard part is *finding the decent one*.
